I painted eight planets and then remembered there are nine... so I looked it up and saw that in the summer of 2006 the IAU (International Astronomical Union) declared Pluto as a dwarf planet. So I must have heard that and subconsciously stored it away.

Since then of course they have found hundreds of planets and will find many more as technology advances, which I find very exciting.

The eight planets of our Solar System are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Pluto is now classified as a dwarf planet.

Apparently planets were thought to be wandering stars by the Ancients. As time went on, celestial objects that orbited the Sun were considered planets. The IAUs new classification may change again of course with technology and new discoveries.
