Description
This is Turtle Rock in McCrae Lake. I spent a lot of time in that area in the mid 1980's and early 1990's before it became well known and an extremely popular destination. I used to pack out all of the refuse that the canoe could hold... The family really enjoyed this special place.
The cirrus cloud tells a remarkable story. Typically I use the cirrus patterns to decide exactly where along the deformation zone my location might be located. These cyclonic swirls on the dry side of the deformation zone were conclusive. The col of the deformation zone was directed right at me. The cyclonic branch of the deformation zone would cross my campsite with rain in a day or so. I keep suggesting to people that they need to take a meteorologist with them wherever you go!
Cirrus is a high, ice crystal cloud. These layers of ice crystals are optically thin meaning that they do not substantially block a lot of the light. In fact back lit, thin cirrus cloud is brighter due to the Mie forward scattering from the ice crystals which are large in comparison to the air molecules. The brightness of the backlit cirrus cloud will gradually diminish as it thickens with more ice crystals and actually blocks more the sunlight. When this happens, the concepts of backlit cloud can be used to locate the probable location of the sun.
As I painted this scene, it was remarkable the memories that came flooding back years after paddling every nook and cranny of McCrae Lake. I could recall countless features along the shore along with memories of startling a older gentleman skinny dipping and an amourous couple "wrestling" in a small clearing. The nice smallmouth bass I caught in shallow water - and the picture taken by an American fisherman. I quickly released the fish and the group of them started to cast in the same spot just off their campsite. I can't make this stuff up. It really happened.
